KINGSTON- The Ulster County Department of Emergency Services is proud to announce the observance of Fire Prevention Week 2023, taking place through October 14, 2023.  Fire Prevention Week is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about fire safety and educating the community on preventive measures.  This year marks the 101st anniversary of the vital campaign, commemorated with the theme “Cooking Safety Starts With You, Pay Attention to Fire Prevention.”

Key Facts:

  • Between 2014-2018, an average of 172,900 home fires were annually attributed to cooking activities.
  • Each year, an average of 550 civilians tragically lose their lives due to cooking-related fires, with 4,820 individuals suffering injuries.
  • Alarmingly, over a quarter of those who lost their lives in cooking fires were sleeping at the time of the incident.

We encourage all members of the media to participate in Fire Prevention Week 2023 and help spread the word about the importance of fire safety in the kitchen.  For additional information and fun activities for children, please visit https://www.nfpa.org/Events/Events/Fire-Prevention-Week.
