ALBANY – Since 2019 it has been illegal to generate so-called “revenge porn” where the likeness of a former romantic partner is placed on a sexually explicit image.

A new law sponsored by Senator Michelle Hinchey (D, Saugerties) expands that.

“What our bill does it now makes it illegal for someone to intentionally disseminate fake explicit images, otherwise known as deepfake, without someone’s consent,” she said.

That is becoming more prevelant with artificial intelligence and the lawmaker said it will not be tolerated in New York.

Those found guilty could face a year in jail and a $1,000 fine and the victims have the right to pursue legal action against the perpetrators.
