THOMPSON – There is concern among some that if three casinos are approved in the City of New York, they could siphon off business from Resorts World Catskills in the Town of Thompson.

Others are not worried, like the leadership of Resorts World that has pumped millions into redeveloping the Monster Golf Course and other projects in the Sullivan County facility.

Resorts World Vice President Megan Taylor said they are not concerned because of the diversity of what their venues have to offer.

“What we are able to do is really provide unique experiences for all different types of gaming and entertainment guests, and we have positioned all of our properties in New York to provide a very, very different experience, and that was done on purpose, both geographically and with the amenities on the properties,” she said.

Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh), meanwhile, said she will fight the proposals for the City of New York. She termed the issue a regional one.

Thompson Town Supervisor Bill Rieber said while competition can be “scary,” he is confident Resorts World can handle it.

Sullivan County Partnership President Mark Baez said gambling is only one of the many activities and amenities the county and region has to offer to give people a reason to come to the Catskills.
