CARMEL – Putnam County Sheriff Kevin McConville said the fatal shooting of a man by two sheriff’s deputies showed that “the actions of the deceased brought about his death.”

The sheriff was reacting to a report by the State Attorney General one week ago dealing with a January 10 incident in the Town of Southeast.

Deputies had responded to a possible kidnapping on a deserted road in Southeast. They found the man holding a woman on the ground while stabbing her and raising his arm while holding a knife ready to stab the victim again.

The man refused commands to drop the knife and used deadly force to stop the attack.

The victim was administered first aid before being transported to a hospital.

The assailant also received first aid and life-saving measures but died.

McConville called the deputies involved heroes who made a split-second decision that saved someone’s life. “The deputies’ training, knowledge, and ability all came into play,” he said.
