KINGSTON – It is almost one year since Ulster County decided to offer free service on its UCAT bus system and ridership has increased by double digits.

County Executive Jen Metzger said the number of people riding on Ulster County Area Transit has increased by about 18 percent.

“Most of our funding for our bus system is federal and state funds, and that state funding is tied to the number of riders you have. So, when we increase ridership, we increase the funding available to expand routes and service,” she said.

The county legislature set October 1, 2022, as the start of the no-fare UCAT service.
