GOSHEN – The Orange County Legislature is preparing to move forward with the purchase of a 10-mile unused, 101-acre section of the former Erie Railroad right-of-way to develop the Schunnemunk Rail Trail through the towns of Cornwall, Blooming Grove, and Chester and the Village of Washingtonville.

County Legislator Kathy Stegenga, who represents a portion of that area, said the project is a long time in coming.

“We are very excited about including our area that will now be able to go into Chester, up to Goshen and be able to get from one side of the county to the other. It’s very exciting,” she said.

The land will be purchased from the Open Space Land Trust at a total cost of over $2.3 million, most of which would be covered by the Federal Transit Administration and the state with a local match of $236,250.
