BUCHANAN- Officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission have released the findings of a decommissioning inspection that was conducted at the Indian Point power plan in Buchanan in June.  The NRC is responsible for overseeing the safe decommissioning of shut down nuclear reactors such as the ones at Indian Point.

The inspection cited Holtec, the company conducting the decommissioning of the plant, with two minor violations of NRC requirements.  The violations cited in the report were described as “with no or relatively inappreciable safety consequence” and identifies them as being a “very low safety significance.”

The inspection consisted of observations by the inspectors, interviews with site personnel, a review of procedures and records, and plant inspections.  The two violations included the untimely filing of a report with the NRC and the presence of transient combustible material, including a full plastic trash bag, cardboard, hoses, and cords within 35 feet of  locations where hot work was being conducted.

Regulators will continue to monitor Holtec during the decommissioning process, which is expected to take more than a decade and cost in excess of $2 billion.  Decommissioning activities began after the plant was shut down in 2021.
