MONTICELLO – What appears to be a gang-related incident, gunfire was exchanged shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday on Forestburgh Road and Hamilton Road not far from the high school in the Village of Monticello.
According to village police, a man driving on Forestburgh Road stopped, got out of his vehicle, and exchanged gunfire with other persons who were along the shoulder of the northbound lane of Forestburgh Road.
Several shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Police said the incident was not targeted toward members of the Jewish community, who have summer residences and colonies in the area, although several people were walking along the road at the time.
Monticello Police were assisted in the investigation by State Police, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, and a K-9 unit from the state Department of Environmental Conservation Police.
Police did not say if anyone was injured in the gunfire.
