MONROE – Zayed Kadir is a 15-year-old Monroe-Woodbury High School student going into 10th grade, and he has gone straight to the district administration and board of education urging them to recognize and close schools on the two Islamic holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Following his talks, Kadir is encouraged by the response from the school officials.

“They said that they do see that there is a large and growing population of Muslims in the school district and that moving forward they will be looking into whether or not they can,” he said. “The 2023-2024 school year, the calendar has already been decided so they are unable to put it in for this upcoming school year.”

But the high schooler who has his sights on going to Columbia University in three years, said the administration said they will continue discussions with him and other students about closing school on those holidays going forward.
