Poughkeepsie firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at the laundromat on Academy Street on Saturday.

POUGHKEEPSIE – City firefighters dowsed a fire in an Academy Street laundromat before the flames could damage the delicates and spread to the upstairs apartments and surrounding buildings.

Poughkeepsie firefighters on Engine 2 were in the vicinity of 84 Academy Street, conducting driver training with some of the new members when the alarm was sounded.  The firefighters quickly responded and were followed by the remaining city rigs and backed up by firefighters from Arlington.

The firefighters extinguished the flames in less than 30 minutes and were putting their equipment back on the rigs while the fire inspector went to work to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

A representative of the city’s building department and Central Hudson workers responded to the scene at the request of fire officials.
