HYDE PARK – A Hyde Park man has been arrested on felony gun charges after being stopped for speeding, according to Hyde Park Police Chief Robert Benson.  Thirty-three-year-old David Weir has been charged with the felonies of criminal possession of a weapon for having a loaded firearm and criminal possession of a weapon for possessing a defaced handgun.  He was also issued a speeding ticket.

According to Chief Benson, one of his patrol officers pulled a vehicle over on Violet Avenue (Route 9G) near Yates Avenue for speeding.  The officer was interviewing the driver, now identified as Weir, when he observed a handgun on the driver’s floor.  Weir denied owning the weapon despite being the only occupant of the vehicle.

Weir, who does not have a valid pistol permit, was taken into custody at the scene.  The loaded pistol was determined to be a .380 semi-automatic that had no legible serial number on the firearm.

Weir was arraigned in the Town of Hyde Park Justice Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail on $15,000 cash bail, $30,000 bond and/or $75,000 partially secured bond. He is due back in court on August 17 at 5:30 pm.
