HIGH FALLS – Clean-up was undertaken for a fuel oil spill that occurred around 8:30 Tuesday morning when a fuel delivery truck operated by HOP Energy rolled over on Mohonk Road in High Falls. The State Department of Environmental Conservation estimated 2,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled before Kingston HAZMAT was able to plug the leak.

The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m., leading to a spill of the fuel oil onto the roadway and into a drainage swale.

DEC was overseeing the cleanup to ensure it is protective of public health and the environment.

The truck owner contracted a heavy wrecker for vehicle recovery and VazCo for spill cleanup, DEC said. VazCo dispatched a crew with a spill trailer and a vacuum truck.

The cleanup operations are mandated to be executed and funded by the company that operated the vehicle.

Several response teams responded to the scene, including the Ulster County Department of Emergency Services, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, State Police, High Falls Fire District, Stone Ridge Fire District, Rosendale Fire District, City of Kingston Fire Department and HAZMAT team, Bloomington Fire District, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The cause of the incident is presently under investigation by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.
