RAMAPO – A 61-year-old bus driver has been arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Edgar Hawkins of Stony Point was charged in connection with a March 21 crash involving a pedestrian.

Ramapo Town Police found a nine-year-old child pinned under a 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan. The officer and bystanders were able to lift the front end of the minivan and free the child, who was transported to Westchester Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

Police said it appears that the child, a student at Cherry Lane Elementary School and a Ramapo resident, had gotten off the school bus at the intersection of Pioneer Avenue and North Airmont Road, where he was struck by a 2010 F550 pickup truck traveling westbound.

The child was thrown and came to rest under the Toyota minivan, which had stopped for traffic.

The driver of the truck, a 43-year-old Spring Valley resident, remained on the scene and cooperated with the police.

Hawkins was arrested on Thursday, July 20, 2023 following the investigation. He was released pending a future court appearance.
