MIDDLETOWN- The revitalization of downtown Middletown has attracted new businesses and additional visitors in recent years, and while the influx of people has been welcomed, patrons to the city’s center during busy times often find difficulty parking.  Mayor Joe Destefano and State Senator James Skoufis announced on Wednesday that relief is on the way in the form of a parking garage across from the Paramount Theater on South Street.

Destefano said there is upwards of $30 million of private investment coming to the downtown Middletown area.  The city recently completed an extensive downtown revitalization initiative and the garage will be key to support the downtown’s future growth.  It will also support the parking needs for events that take place at the 1,100 seat Paramount Theater.

“One of, if not the most frequent complaint that I’ve heard over the past many moths and over the past year or so since I’ve started spending a lot of time in Middletown is that we need more parking in the downtown area of our city, especially on weekends,” said Skoufis.

Skoufis was instrumental in making the project a reality by securing state funds totaling $2.5 million to fund the first phase of the project.  The first phase will bring a two-story parking deck to the location.  The structure will be engineered so that more decks can be added in the future.
