WASHINGTON D.C.- U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Congressman Pat Ryan (NY-18) are jointly calling on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to mobilize federal disaster assessment teams in response to flooding that claimed one life and left portions of the Hudson Valley in ruin.
The federal officials urged FEMA to stand ready to approve any request from New York State for a major disaster declaration that could bring significant federal resources to the region to help rebuild.
“This loss of life and extensive damage to homes, businesses, and transportation infrastructure is devastating and will likely total tens of millions of dollars in costs suffered taking months and months to repair, according to my early discussion with those on the ground,” said Schumer.
“There’s no time to wait – FEMA must activate their Disaster Assessment Teams and prepare to fulfill any and all requests from New York State for additional assistance,” said Congressman Ryan. “I also want to thank our first responders, who have been working nonstop under very dangerous conditions.
An estimated 1o inches of rain fell on the West Point area on Sunday, nearly the entire amount that falls during a typical summer season. These severe rains resulted in tremendous damage to roads, bridges, homes, and businesses in the area and tragically claimed the life of a woman in her 40’s from Fort Montgomery who was swept away in flood waters.
