FORT MONTGOMERY – Sunday’s rainfall and flash flooding have resulted in the death of a Fort Montgomery woman.  The torrential rains and flooding have put thousands of residents in danger and a State of Emergency has been declared by Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus.

Orange County officials have told Mid-Hudson News that the Fort Motgomery woman, believed to be in her early 40s, was fearful that her house was going to be swept away in the flooding.  The woman allegedly exited the house and was subsequently swept away in the raging flood waters, resulting in her death.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

Additionally, State Route 218 which connects Cornwall to West Point has experienced a “catastrophic” washout of the roadway due to flooding.  The road is closed.

The New York State Police are warning motorists to avoid travel on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, Long Mountain Circle, Route 6, The Bear Mountain Bridge, and Highland Falls due to major flooding.

As of Sunday evening, the William J. Moreau Popolopen Bridge in Highland Falls is not passable. Troopers have assisted dozens of motorists out of the area and are currently checking all remaining vehicles still stranded in the area to ensure that there is no one stranded or left behind.

The Palisades Parkway Northbound was closed Sunday from exit 14 to Long Mountain Traffic Circle.
