POUGHKEEPSIE – A City of Poughkeepsie resident has been arrested after a police officer witnessed an apparent drug deal on Main Street Friday morning.  The subject fled on foot and was apprehended after a brief pursuit shortly after 9:00 a.m. on July 7, 2023.

City of Poughkeepsie Police Lieutenant Mel Clauson says that an officer observed what appeared to be a “hand-to-hand” drug transaction on Main Street.  The officer also noticed what appeared to be a pistol in the man’s waistband.

When officers attempted to make contact with the subject, he began to run away.  The officers caught the subject at the intersection of Main and Clinton Streets and took him into custody.  Police found a BB-type gun in the subject’s waistband and crack cocaine was in his possession.

AnnMarie Shirley was traveling on Main Street at the time and told Mid-Hudson News about the encounter.  “I saw a black man running and then about five cops rolled up at the intersection and took him down with precision and speed.  I’ve never seen anything like this up close and personal.”

Lieutenant Clauson said the Poughkeepsie resident was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and trespassing.  He was released with an appearance ticket for a future court appearance.
