Roof peeled off school as severe thunderstorms roll through area (VIDEOS)

CHESTER – Severe thunderstorms with torrential downpours and lightning rolled through the region Monday afternoon uprooting trees and peeling the roof off the old Chester High School.

The building was mostt recently used by BOCES for special education classes. No one was reported in the building at 3 Maple Avenue in the Village of Chester and no one was reported injured.

“We are currently assessing weather-related damage to the roof and interior at Maple Avenue School,” said Catherine O’Hara, superintendent of Chester Union Free School District.

In central Orange County, trees and electric cables were downed blocking roads.

In the Town of Goshen, Supervisor Joseph Betro declared a state of emergency because “flooding conditions are dangerous and pose a real and substantial risk to the health and safety of those residing in certain areas of the town.”
