GOSHEN- Several K9’s and their officers graduated from police canine school this week where they were instructed in disciplines such as obedience, agility, evidence recovery, criminal apprehension, and searching for suspects and missing persons.  The school, which runs 16 weeks, was hosted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

One K9 who graduated the school was Marty, who along with his Officer Brian Levy, serve in the Town of New Windsor Police Department.  Both Officer Levy and K9 Marty were previously certified in explosive detection and are capable of indicating on 21 explosive odors.

K9 Marty is a two-year-old German Shepherd, imported from the Slavic Republic.  He is named after former New Windsor Police Detective Marty Mitchetti Jr. who passed away in 2005.  Detective Mitchetti was a canine handler at the time of his death.

The graduates of the recent K9 training program are serving in several law enforcement agencies throughout Orange County.
