CARMEL – The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 39-year-old Patterson man after several crimes were committed at the Southeast Metro-North train station. Thomas Capalbo was arrested on June 23 at the Southeast train station by sheriff’s investigators and MTA Police after he exited a train at the station.

According to Captain Michael Grossi, a joint investigation by the sheriff’s office and MTA Police was launched in June after MTA Police received a report of a truck stolen from the Southeast train station parking lot on June 1. The vehicle had been left unlocked and the keys were inside the vehicle. The vehicle was eventually recovered in Yonkers.

On June 12 a wallet was stolen from an unlocked vehicle at a residence on Route 312 in Southeast. Cash and credit cards were taken and the credit cards were used to make purchases at businesses in Southeast, Mount Kisco, and Bronx.

On June 16, MTA Police received a report of the theft of a wallet from an unlocked vehicle at the Southeast Train Station, and stolen credit cards were used to make unauthorized purchases at several local businesses. Within a few days, this same vehicle that had the wallet stolen was itself taken as the owner had left the keys in it. The vehicle was recovered by MTA Police shortly after the theft, parked on a side street in the Putnam Lake section of Patterson.

An investigation by sheriff’s investigators and MTA Police detectives developed Capalbo as a suspect in the rash of thefts. After his arrest, Capalbo was interviewed at the sheriff’s office where he admitted to committing the thefts.
