NEW WINDSOR – The Republican primary race between former New York State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt and Town Councilman Stephen Bedetti is too close to call after the polls closed on Tuesday night.  Unofficially, Schmitt has a three-vote lead over Bedetti, having received 754 ballots.

The two men have been involved in a highly-contested race for Town Supervisor.

There are approximately 49 absentee ballots that have to be received by July 5th in order to be opened and counted.  There are also 35 votes that were cast by affidavit that have yet to be counted.

Further delaying the certification of the contest is a New York law that requires an automatic hand recount of the ballots if the margin of victory is 20 votes or less; or 0.5% or less; or less than 5,000 votes in a contest where one million or more ballots are cast.
