Monticello, Ellenville top list of villages with highest taxes in state

ALBANY- The Village of Ellenville in Ulster County, with a tax rate of $20.37 per $1,000 of full taxable value, topped the region for property tax rates among villages and is third overall in in the entire State of New York.  Ellenville’s full taxable value is just over $156.5 million and the village raised $3,189483 from property taxes.

The Village of Monticello, located in Sullivan County, finishes with one of the state’s highest tax rates, came in the fourth position statewide overall with a tax rate of $19.33 per $1,000 of full taxable value.  The village’s full taxable value is approximately double that of Ellenville’s at just over $301.5 million.  Monticello raised $5,829,470  from property taxes.

The Village of South Blooming Grove, located in Orange County, has one of the lowest tax rates at $1.57, with $316.9 million in full taxable value.  The village raises $497,805 from property taxes each year.  South Blooming Grove’s rate is not only the lowest in Orange County, but ranks 496th out of 528 villages in the State of New York in tax rate.

The data, which was reported by New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, was from 2022 which is the latest information available.  Under the law, not all services provided by villages are mandated, such as police protection, which can impact a municipality’s operating budget and tax rate.
