STONY POINT – A Montreal, Canada resident was seriously injured when his Hyundai Kona ran off the roadway on the Palisades Interstate Parkway near exit 17 in the Town of Stony Point, struck a tree in the center median and caught fire.

State Police said Usher Schwartz, 28, was driving southbound at a high rate of speed at around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. He passed several vehicles when he lost control, and the vehicle ran off the road.

He was pulled to safety by several witnesses and other motorists.

When his Hyundai hit the tree, pieces from the front end broke loose, traveling into the northbound lanes, striking three other vehicles – a 2017 Mazda SUV, a 2020 Honda SUV, and a 2015 Toyota SUV.

None of the occupants in those vehicles were injured.

Schwartz was transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla in serious condition.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Stony Point Fire Department.

The incident remains under investigation.
