NEWBURGH – Claims by the Teamsters union that represents postal workers in the region that changes to the mail delivery system will make it worse are not accurate, a spokesman for the Postal Service says.

“As the Postal Service implements the Delivering for America plan, one of its many initiatives is the creation of Sorting and Delivery Centers (S&DCs),” according to the agency. “The first S&DC site was unveiled in the fall of 2022 in Athens, Georgia. We are moving forward with opening 5 new S&DC locations this spring in Gainesville, FL; Panama City, FL; Woburn, MA; Utica, NY; and Bryan, TX.”

What used to be called the Stewart Airport General Mail Facility in the airport industrial park, is slated to be converted to a sorting and delivery center.

The union claims that will slow down mail delivery when it is shifted from local post offices and may also lead to layoffs.

Both of those assertions are incorrect, the post service spokesman said.

“As we move forward with this initiative, customers will see no changes to their local post office retail operations. No post offices will be closed and PO Box service will not be changed,” the representative said.

“Employees will benefit from this new model through new, modern workplaces,” he said. “There will be no employee lay-offs as part of this effort. Any movement of employees will be done in accordance with the respective collective bargaining agreement.”
