CATSKILL – No asylum seekers from New York City have been bused to Greene County at this point in time, but top county officials have declared a state of emergency in the event some people are relocated there.

“Greene County has approximately 3/100’s of the population of New York City and an economy and infrastructure consistent with that stunning differential,” the declaration reads. “Greene County is incapable of receiving and sustaining the volume of migrants and/or asylum seekers that New York City intends to deliver.”

The declaration also said Greene County “is already facing significant shortages of housing, medical care and transportation; together with a growing homeless population,” and it was noted there is no hospital within the county.

The state of emergency was declared by Patrick Linger, chairman of the county legislature.
