NEWBURGH – Police are trying to figure out how a vehicle ended up crashing and catching fire underneath the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge at around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The vehicle, appeared to be a pickup truck, was found down a steep embankment and up in flames on the Town of Newburgh side of the Hudson River.
Police said the occupants fled the scene.
Investigators said the vehicle appears to have crashed from a local road on top of a hill and just barely missed going into the river, ending up just steps between the river and the CSX railroad tracks.
Police stopped all train traffic while firefighters worked to put the fire out.
