POUGHKEEPSIE – City Mayor Marc Nelson has successfully defended a challenge to the validity of his Democratic designating petitions and his name will be on the Democratic primary ballot in the City of Poughkeepsie on June 27, 2023.  The challenge, filed by fellow Democratic mayoral candidate Wesley Lee, was ruled on by Dutchess County Supreme Court Justice Maria Rosa on Monday.

A total of three Democrats are vying to be the next mayor: Mayor Nelson, Wesley Lee, and Poughkeepsie Councilwoman Yvonne Flowers.

Nelson needed 440 valid signatures to appear on the ballot.  He filed petitions containing 924 signatures.  Lee, through his attorney, Michael Treybich, challenged the validity of 641 of those signatures.

After a review by the Dutchess County Board of Elections, followed by Justice Rosa, 334 signatures were invalidated for a variety of reasons, leaving Nelson with 590 valid signatures.
