KINGSTON – How to do deal with Ulster County’s future solid waste disposal was debated by the Ulster County Legislature Tuesday night as lawmakers voted to oppose a countywide landfill on two specific sites in the Town of Plattekill.

The county currently trucks its garbage to a landfill in Seneca Falls, which is due to close in five years.

While lawmakers debated where to site a potential landfill in the county, Legislator Kathy Nolan took another approach.

“I would favor reviving the Greene-Ulster-Sullivan studies and looking at them as a very responsible way to deal with our geography, geology here in Ulster County and the fact that we have so much land that is already protected lands from New York City and New York State,” she said.

Other lawmakers suggested looking at the county as a whole, not town by town individually.
