Two charged in murder of 14-year-old

WHITE PLAINS – Two men were arraigned in Westchester County Court on Friday on an indictment charging them in connection with the March murder of a 14-year-old boy, Zyaire Fernandez, in Mount Vernon.

Westchester District Attorney Miriam Rocah said a grand jury indicted Tyrese Coghiel, 21, of Mount Vernon for murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Phillip Ferrell, 46, of Yonkers, was indicted on four counts of criminal possession of a weapon, hindering the prosecution, hindering prosecution and tampering with physical evidence.

Coghiel was arraigned on May 5 and remanded, and Ferrell, who was arraigned on May 12, had bail set previously and remains in custody at the Westchester County Jail.

On March 9 at about 10:30 a.m., Coghiel allegedly used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol to shoot the victim in the back on South 7th Avenue in Mount Vernon. Fernandez was transported to the hospital where he died.

Coghiel was arrested in Brooklyn; Ferrell in Yonkers, both on March 14.
