Middletown detective suspended following physical altercation with teenage boy at restaurant

MIDDLETOWN – A Middletown city cop faces charges following a scuffle with 14-year-old high school student during a private party at the Olde Erie Restaurant on Saturday, May 6.

The boy was not injured during the incident, police said on Friday.

The officer, Detective Fredrick Slanovec, was initially suspended with pay, but following a Middletown Police Commission session on Thursday, his status was changed to suspending without pay, formal departmental charges were filed against him with the potential to seek his termination.

The police department initiated both internal and criminal investigations into the incident.A formal hearing will be held to adjudicate the charges and afford proper due process as per the city charter.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is assisting with the investigation and will determine if criminal charges will be filed.
