POUGHKEEPSIE – The Dutchess County Board of Elections (BOE) has rejected Joseph Cavaccini’s effort to have incumbent Wappinger Town Supervisor Richard Thurston disqualified to seek re-election on the Republican line.

Cavaccini, currently a county legislator, filed with the BOE to have Thurston’s nominating petitions ruled invalid.

“Mr. Cavaccini neglected to properly serve Mr. Thurston with his specific objections on the day of the filing and also did not provide proof of service to the BOE within the time frame outlined in the statute. This is a required step in order for the BOE to adjudicate any objections and since they weren’t met we did not consider the objections. Since petitions are presumed valid there will be a Republican primary in Wappinger for Town Supervisor between candidates Thurston and Cavaccini,” Election Commissioner Haight told Mid-Hudson News by email.

Cavaccini said he is running for the top spot because the current supervisor is “overdeveloping” the town. “I’m looking for what’s best for the people of the Town of Wappinger.”

Robin Licari will be running for supervisor in November on the Democratic line.
