MONTICELLO – A 56-year-old Liberty man, who has nine prior felony convictions, including seven for burglary, was sentenced in Sullivan County Court to 15 years to life in prison for his conviction for felony burglary.

Ralph Sparks was found guilty on April 28 of unlawfully entering a residence in the Village of Liberty on February 28, 2022 and stealing jewelry and cash.

Following the trial, Acting District Attorney Brian Conaty’s office requested a hearing to determine whether Sparks would be eligible for lifetime incarceration based on his criminal history.

After the conclusion of the hearing, the court authorized the sentence imposed.

Liberty Village Police Chief Steven D’Agata said the victim in this case was at home at the time of the burglary “and will have to forever live with the loss of the feeling of safety and well-being that we should all have in our homes.”

The chief commended his village officers and detectives and the DA’s office for investigating the case.
