KINGSTON – Local residents in Kingston will have an opportunity to learn clean energy job skills this summer when Communities for Local Power launches its fourth annual training program. The Empower Kingston Green Jobs Program pairs local employers with individuals seeking to learn new skills in the field.

The Kingston-based internship program places trainees with local employers for eight weeks of onsite work experience and mentoring, rotating among different worksites, where trainees will receive training in home air-sealing and weatherization, solar panel installation, heat pumps, geothermal energy systems, indoor air quality, energy auditing, plumbing, electrical, and general construction.

Participating contractors in 2023 include Altren Energy Geothermal Engineering & Contracting; Capital Electric;  Dan Carey Plumbing & Heating; Energy Conservation Services, Inc.; Green Pathway Consultants; J&J Painting; JHC Construction Services; Net Zero Now; RYCOR HVAC; and SunCommon. Trainees can opt to supplement their on-site work experience with online instruction and coursework at SUNY Ulster for one day to two days per week, all paid for by the program.

Benefits of the program include hands-on experience, forging relationships with respected local contractors, the opportunity to apply for continuing training through SUNY Ulster, and career guidance. All trainees receive tools and work boots. A vehicle is required for trainees outside of the Kingston area, and for those within Kingston, transportation can be provided. Accepted applicants will be compensated at the rate of $18/hour for 24 to 40 hours per week.
