MIDDLETOWN- The City of Middletown hosted its city-wide cleanup on Saturday with more than 500 people volunteering to spruce up the city in observance of Earth Day.  The event is in its 15th year and this year a record number of residents, local groups, and service organizations gathered to support the effort.

This was one of many Earth Day community cleanups around the region.

Rick McCormack, the City of Middletown Clerk was one of the organizers of the event.

“This is a great day, it’s Earth Day across the country and we’re here to go out in the City of Middletown to pick up litter.  We are all very excited, and this day really has a positive impact on our city,” said McCormack.

Volunteers gathered at 9 a.m. at the Erie Way Park Pavilion where they were provided all of the necessary equipment and deployed to areas throughout the city.  Volunteers were given donated event t-shirts and Mid-City Transit provided shuttle service from Erie Park throughout the city.

The shuttle buses were driven by Middletown school bus drivers who donated their time, and the buses used were fully electric powered, and are among the first fully electric school buses in the state.
