NEWBURGH – Almost five months into 2023 and the City of Newburgh has yet to hire a fire commissioner, a new position in the city approved in this year’s budget.

The position has yet to be advertised and no candidates have applied, according to officials at City Hall.

The salary for the post will be set by the city council, but it is believed to be aboutg $130,000 annually, plus benefits.

Newburgh currently has a fire chief. Under the new hierarchy, the commissioner would be the top official in the department with the chief serving under that individual.

The commissioner is to be appointed by the city manager and will have supervision and control of the bureaus of fire, fire prevention and code compliance.

Under the new structure, the fire chief, also appointed by the city manager, will have administrative responsibility for fire fighting and fire prevention activities including code enforcement.
