HYDE PARK – Just before midnight Saturday night, an alert Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) deputy spotted a man trying to break into the Bourbon Street Liquor store on Route 9 in Hyde Park.  The deputy attempted to make contact with the male who was trying to open the door when he returned to his vehicle and repeatedly rammed the building with the car and then tried to hit the deputy’s vehicle and a responding Hyde Park police vehicle.

The subject, described as a white male with long hair, 30-35 years old, wearing black pants and a gray shirt, fled south on Route 9 after failing to hit the police cars.  The deputy and Hyde Park officer pursued the car but the man refused to comply.

As the suspect and officers raced south on Route 9, the subject struck a Hyde Park patrol vehicle and tried to hit the deputy’s vehicle again.  At 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, the deputy reported that the subject had crashed in the area of Stewart’s on Route 9 near the Poughkeepsie town line.  The deputy immediately asked for EMS, with the dispatcher advising that Fairview firefighters and Mobile Life were being dispatched.

The deputy indicated that the subject vehicle’s airbags had deployed and reported that the subject was in custody at the scene.  He apparently sustained several lacerations to his face during the crash that ended the pursuit.

Several police units from the DCSO, New York State Police, and Hyde Park Police Department were observed at the crash scene, conducting an investigation at 1:20 a.m. on Easter Sunday.
