Driver strikes police car and flees

TOWN OF WARWICK – A driver who struck a Town of Warwick Police car and fled the scene, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and several traffic violations, police said.

The incident occurred at around 10:18 p.m. on Friday, March 31 when police conducted a traffic strop on Maple Avenue in the Village of Warwick.

A second police unit was requested to assist.

About 10 minutes later as officers were clearing the vehicle stop and the second officer approached his patrol car, it was struck on the driver’s side by an oncoming vehicle.

The officer was able to jump out of the way without being injured, but the vehicle that struck the patrol car fled. It was stopped on Route 94 by the first police car at the original stop.

As per department policy, the case was turned over to the State Police to investigate.

The accident remains under investigation and police did not release the names of the people involved.
