NEWBURGH – There is only one hotel in the City of Newburgh but a growing number of short-term rental facilities.
Like many other municipalities around the region, Newburgh wants to collect a room occupancy tax.
Approved by the state, that five percent tax will take effect on Saturday, April 1.
Mayor Torrance Harvey said some bed-and-breakfasts have asked the city to delay the implementation.
“They want us to hold off until the state legislature and the state governor have made this a statewide tax, and so we said ‘no chance;’ we got approved by the state,” he said.

Anyone renting out property or rooms for short-term stays must now register a certificate of authority, collect tax, or ensure the tax is collected, and submit it quarterly to the city.
