GOSHEN – Orange County Sheriff Paul Arteta has named department veteran Meredith McGovern as the new Chief of Police for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO). The announcement was made earlier this week. McGovern began her carer with the OCSO in 2009.
McGovern began her law enforcement career in 2007 as a Police Officer with the NYPD assigned to the Manhattan Transit Bureau, before joining the OCSO in October 2009.
According to the OCSO, McGovern has held every civil service rank within the department. As a sergeant, she was assigned to the FBI White Collar Crime Task Force before eventually serving as the patrol lieutenant, and investigations lieutenant before serving as captain for the last two years. The new chief is also a graduate of the FBI national academy.
In announcing the promotion, Sheriff Paul Arteta said “Her commendable determination, her tremendous knowledge, and experience will be a great asset as the Chief of Police the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.”
According to the OCSO website, McGovern has had the following assignments during her tenure with the department:
- Patrol
- Marine Unit
- Completed NYS Civil School, Albany
- Safe Child Program
- Promoted to Investigator in 2010
- Assigned to the FBI White Collar Crime Task Force in June 2011
- (Investigating public corruption, civil rights violations, and complex financial frauds)
- Promoted to Sergeant in 2014
- Promoted to Lieutenant in 2018
- Promoted to Captain in 2021
McGovern earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
