MIDDLETOWN – The former federal courthouse on South Street in Middletown that the city purchased many years ago, has finally received approval from Albany to remodel and expand it to conform with state standards.

Mayor Joseph DeStefano said work should begin on the building in the months ahead.

“This will be a major project for the city that will be phase one of meeting the state mandate of having a second court because the court system now does regional courts and Middletown is one of the regional courts,” he said. “Phase two would be the conversion of the existing court into a combination of an expansion of both police services and some city hall offices being relocated into that building.”

Bids for the construction work on the new courthouse will be opened in one week.
