POUGHKEEPSIE – Friday’s storm caused “moderate” flooding at Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie as the Hudson River reached high tide at 12:05 p.m. Moderate flooding, according to the National Weather Service, is when a stream or river has risen over the banks and reached structures such as buildings or roadways.
The storm arrived on Friday with rain, heavy at times, high winds, and temperatures approaching 50 degrees at 11:30 a.m. As the temperatures began to drop, snow began to mix with the rain.
In advance of air temperature predicted to drop into the single digits, highway crews throughout the area began spreading a salt/sand mixture on the roadways. The weather service indicated that all surface water will likely freeze, leading to hazardous driving conditions Friday night.
In Poughkeepsie, City Administrator Marc Nelson told Mid-Hudson News that a DPW crew was being deployed at 2 p.m. to begin the salting and sanding of roadways. “The city has its 2-10 p.m. team fully operational Friday evening and will be reevaluating conditions at 8 p.m. to assess the need for overnight resources.”
