NEWBURGH – Former Newburgh City Councilwoman Gay Lee wants to get back into politics to be part of the conversation about the community’s many problems.

Lee, a Democrat who holds a doctorate in social work, wants to address the city’s concerns and how they impact its residents.

“This isn’t about running against someone. This is about running against the problems here,” she said, in expressing her interest in returning to the city council.

Lee is concerned about crime in the city, the water that she still is afraid to drink, and what she said is the need to have a conversation with Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and its services. Lee said the health care facility does not have a psychiatrist on staff and there is no substance abuse unit.

She also believes major institutions in Newburgh, including the hospital and colleges, which are tax exempt, should make payments-in-lieu-of-taxes to help the city’s tax base.
