Ulster Sheriff’s Sergeant graduates from FBI academy

KINGSTON – A sergeant in the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office has graduated as a member of the 284th session of the FBI National Academy.

Sgt. James Mullen is the sixth member in the department’s history to complete the program. Nationally, less than one percent of officers have the opportunity to attend the program.

The national academy offers 10 weeks of advances communication, leadership, and fitness training.

On average, participating officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive level positions.

“The training of our future is extremely important. The leadership course that is the FBI National Academy is world renowned,” said Sheriff Juan Figueroa.

Sgt. Mullen began his law enforcement career in 2003 as a dispatcher for the Saugerties Police Department. Two years later, he was hired as an officer by the Saugerties Police Department.

He also worked as a Town of Woodstock officer and in 2007 became a full-time deputy in the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office. In 2020, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
