KINGSTON – After months of debate and study, the Ulster County Legislature Tuesday night voted to purchase the 57-acre Paradies Lane property in New Paltz for a government operation center.

Lawmakers had debated an alternative of building at the Golden Hill site in Kingston.

Among those who support bringing the project to New Paltz is Eric Stewart.

“I think this location is a good one in that it brings a government hub to the southern portion of the county, and I know there are many legislators that represent districts that are not a convenient drive to Kingston and having a second government hub in that neck of the woods,” he said.

Conservative Legislator Joe Maloney opposes the New Paltz decision. He said the county does not need that much property for the project, especially on a large brownfield that he said is contaminated from pesticides from when it was an apple orchard.
