POUGHKEEPSIE – Two local laws to increase the real property tax exemption for qualifying veterans in Dutchess County have the support of lawmakers.

One law addresses the exemption for Cold War veterans and the other addresses the standard exemption for other veterans, officially called the Alternative Veterans Exemption.

The county Cold War exemption has not been raises since its inception in 2007 and the Alternative exemption has not been raised since 2005.

“This tax exemption law represents an overdue adjustment to our veteran real property tax exemption, which has decreased because of inflation even though it remains unchanged on paper from where it was years ago,” said Legislature Chairman Gregg Pulver. “It’s important for us to support our veterans, and through these laws, we can provide some help to vets struggling to pay their bills.”
