GOSHEN – A Newburgh man with prior criminal convictions, including weapons possession, assault with a weapon and animal fighting, was sentenced in Orange County Court on Tuesday to the maximum sentence under the law for possessing a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol with 10 bullets.

On March 1, Corey Owens, 29, was spotted on street cameras discarding a jacket by Van Ness Street and Carpenter Avenue when police vehicles were nearby.

Officers recovered the jacket along with the gun.

At trial, prosecutors argued that DNA evidence taken from the gun corroborated that the weapon had been possessed by Owens.

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision.

District Attorney David Hoovler called Owens a “violent recidivist” and said he hopes this conviction and sentence “stands as a warning to others that the unlawful possession of dangerous firearms will be met by severe punishment.”
