ALBANY – Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed the New York Army and Air National Guards along with other resources in the effort to extinguish the Minnewaska State Park forest fire near Napanoch. At this point, between 130 and 150 acres of forest are burning on the mountain.

Two Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters with three-person crews, capable of dropping 600 gallons of water at a time, have begun aerial operations, while a contingent of five firefighters from the Air National Guard have been deployed.

More than 200 wildland firefighters and volunteers, including rangers, local response resources, and staff from DEC, Office of Parks, Homeland Security, State Police Aviation and state fire division are fighting the fire.

An additional 20 firefighters from Quebec will be joining the effort on Thursday.

Three fires are burning in Napanoch Point, started from lightning strikes, and a smaller fire, two miles east at Stony Kill, was detected with two-thirds of an acre burning.
