Troopers arrest Saugerties man for burglary, arson

CATSKILL – State Police have arrested a Saugerties man on charges of burglarizing and setting fire to a residence on Cauterskill Road in the Town of Catskill.

When troopers responded to the scene on the evening August 19, they observed a camper on the property with the door open.

Troopers went inside and saw the kitchen had been damaged by fire.

The owners of the property told officers that $400 and an all-terrain vehicle had been stolen.

Investigation led the troopers to a residence on Fawn Road in Saugerties where they located 41-year-old John Shultis.

While being interviewed, troopers learned he broke into the camper, stole the ATV as well as started the fire in the residence.

Shultis was arrested on Tuesday, August 23 and charged with the felonies of grand larceny, burglary, and arson.

He was arraigned and remanded to Greene County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.
