MONTICELLO – It has become a late summer ritual – distribution of backpacks full of school supplies for children as they get ready to return to school.

Action Toward Independence began this year’s program on Monday and Akilah Sutphin, the Children and Family Services program manager, said it is well received each year.

“We’re still feeling the impact of COVID; people being unemployed, kids being out of school and not having to go and get these things,” she said. “But now that schools are back in progress and up and moving again, we wanted to help the parents out, just for income reasons or whatever reasons they need for their kids to have a great start for this school year.”

The Action Toward Independence program will be held through September 2 at 309 Broadway in Monticello.
