BEACON – An Ellenville man is in the Dutchess County Jail after he allegedly drew a loaded handgun on a Beacon police officer on Wednesday afternoon on Fishkill Avenue.  Twenty-six-year-old Aaron Thompson is facing a felony charge of criminal possession of a weapon and misdemeanor charges of menacing and endangering the welfare of a child.

Beacon Police Department Lieutenant Tom Figlia said that his agency received a 911 call for a domestic dispute between a man and woman on Fishkill Avenue at approximately 1:50 p.m. on August 17.

The first responding officer encountered a man, later identified as Thompson, in an irate state, walking and yelling in the roadway.  When the officer approached Thompson to speak with him, the subject drew a loaded, 9mm handgun from his pocket and failed to comply with the officer’s commands to drop the weapon.

As Thompson moved toward a parked vehicle, the officer drew his handgun and moved toward cover for safety.  The officer continued to give verbal commands for Thompson to drop the weapon and surrender.

The subject eventually dropped the weapon, determined to be unregistered, and surrendered to police without further incident.

The subsequent police investigation revealed that Thompson allegedly pointed the loaded handgun at a family, including a child, during the domestic dispute.

After being processed, Thompson was transported to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail/$50,000 bond.
